Understanding the Generations: F1, F1B & MultigeneratioN

A Guide to Selecting the Best Goldendoodle for Your Family.

Understanding the Generations: F1 vs. F1B vs. Multigenerational Goldendoodles

When searching for the perfect Goldendoodle, it’s important to understand the differences between the various generations—especially when health, temperament, and longevity matter most.

F1 (First Generation):

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

This is a 50/50 cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. F1 Goldendoodles benefit from what’s called hybrid vigor, which refers to the improved health and vitality that comes from crossing two genetically distinct breeds. Because of this, F1 Goldendoodles are often healthier, more robust, and longer-lived than their purebred parents. They also tend to have the ideal combination of traits from both breeds, including a wavy or loose curly coat, friendly nature, and moderate shedding.

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

This generation is created by breeding an F1 Goldendoodle back to a Poodle. The result is a dog that is 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. While this often produces curlier, more hypoallergenic coats, it can also lead to less balance in temperament and less predictability in health outcomes.

Multigenerational (F2, F3, etc.):

F1B (First Generation Backcross):

Multigenerational (F2, F3, etc.):

These dogs are bred from two Goldendoodle parents. Over generations, breeders may select for specific coat types or appearances, but there is also a higher risk of inherited health issues without careful genetic diversity. If you do choose a Multigenerational over first generation, we would recommend F2, where at minimum the grandparents can be verified with a world class registry and are purebred poodle and golden retriever.

Why We Recommend F1 Goldendoodles

We specialize in first-generation Goldendoodles because they represent the healthiest and most well-rounded option for families. Their hybrid strength makes them more resistant to genetic conditions and provides them with better longevity compared to other generations.

Our F1 Goldendoodles are bred from exceptional lineage—purebred European Golden Retriever and Toy Poodle, both with FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) registered champion bloodlines. This ensures not only top-tier health and structure but also a beautiful temperament ideal for emotional support and therapy.

For families looking for the best blend of health, temperament, and beauty, F1 Goldendoodles are the gold standard.
